Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint John (Climacus) of Sinai, Author of the Ladder of Divine Ascent.
Saint John of Sinai was born around 523 AD in Syria to a wealthy family. He received an excellent education but his desire was to dedicate himself to God. During his teenage years, he became a monk at Sinai Monastery and quickly stood out for his virtues and his faith.
With the death of the abbot, Saint John was elected by the rest of the monks to take his place and lead the Monastery. He remained as an abbot for some years, but later retired to a cave for almost four decades as he wanted to devote himself to exercise and prayer.
He died peacefully in 606 AD leaving behind two works of great theological importance, "The Ladder of Divine Ascent" and "To the Pastor", which are a religious aid to the faith of Christians.
