Woodcarvings

Woodcarving is one of the oldest arts. Great works of art were created in wood during the entire Middle Ages, e.g. in Cathedrals, Abbeys and other Church connected sites. These works demonstrated both craftsmanship and artistry. Famous but mostly, anonymous craftsmen have produced great work that survives over time.

Wood is fragile to fire, water, woodworm etc. Because of its perishable character it is easy to understand that only a small amount of the woodcarving of Christian antiquity still exists. Wood carved projects in churches in Greece exist since the 16th century (such as, doors of churches, temples, church furniture) or even older. But it was in the 18th century that woodcarving developed due to growth of population, economic prosperity as well as social upheavals.

Our collection intends to showcase the art of woodcarving.

"...We received our orders. Everything is very nice and well. We will certainly keep OramaWorld in mind when we want to order liturgical items in the future. It is wonderful they arrived just in time for Lent. Kalli Sarrakosti!..."
