Handmade Byzantine Icon of Saint Leontius, Patriarch of Jerusalem.
Saint Leontius came from Tiberioupolis in Phrygia. After his father's death he became a monk and traveled to Constantinople. At the side of the Metropolitan of Tiberias, to whom he submitted, he had the opportunity to travel to Patmos, the place that became his home for the next few years. He became a monk at Theoktistos monastery, and after being chosen by Theoktistos himself, he became successor and abbot of the monastery.
When after years he was in Constantinople for the affairs of the monastery, the emperor Manuel Comnenus was the first to become a Bishop in Russia or Cyprus. Saint Leontius kindly refused the proposal, but with joy and humility he took over the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, that was also offered to him.
Saint Leontius died on May 14, 1190 AD after exile because of the control he exercised over the new Emperor Andronikos Komnenos.
