Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Polykarpos of Smyrne.
Saint Polykarpos of Smyrne was born in 80 AD and at a young age he embraced Christianity. He had an excellent knowledge of the Scriptures and was appointed Bishop of Smyrna because of his virtues.
His great apostolic work angered the pagans and led to his arrest in 167 AD. After severe torture, Saint Polykarpos died and his body was thrown into the fire.
Apolytikion of Hieromartyr Polycarp in the Fourth Tone
As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Polycarp. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.
