Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Holy Prophet Elias on Chariot and Prophet Elisha.
Holy Prophet Elias lived in Gilead and exercised his prophetic work during the 9th and 10th centuries. His name, Elias, means "Yah is My God" in Hebrew. He lived an ascetic life and showed great zeal for the Teaching of God. His miracles were many and magnificent which testify to his highest theological importance.
When it was time, the Holy Prophet Elias ascended to heaven in a chariot of fire and in a whirlwind. During his ascension, he let his robe fall to earth to be picked up by his disciple Elisha, who by God's will would become the successor of Prophet Elijah "Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place".
