Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Phokas.
Saint Phokas grew up in Sinope on the Black Sea with a Christian education. From a young age, he studied the Scriptures and the teachings of Jesus Christ and led a humble life.
He became known for his miraculous work and was elected Bishop of Sinope. From this position he undertook a great missionary work, for which he was imprisoned and tortured by the pagans.
He died during his martyrdom.
Apolytikion of Saint Phokas
As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Phocas. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.
