Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saints Photius and Anicetus of Nicomedia.
Saints Photius and Anicetus came from Nicomedia and were related by blood, as Saint Photius was the nephew of Saint Anicetus.
Saint Anicetus became known for the strong support he showed in favor of the Christians, when the emperor Diocletian declared their persecution in the Senate. Saint Anicetus spoke with harsh words that angered Diocletian, who ordered his death. Then, the emperor's army threw Saint Anicetus to a lion to devour him, but the beast was tamed in the presence of the Saint. Then they put him on a wheel under a burning fire but again the wheel stopped by miracle.
Saint Photius, moved by the power of God, ran and hugged his uncle, which angered the army, causing them to be immersed in boiling water, where they breathed their last.
Troparion
Your holy martyrs Anicetus and Photius, O Lord, / through their sufferings have received incorruptible crowns from You, our God. / For having Your strength, they laid low their adversaries, / and shattered the powerless boldness of demons. / Through their intercessions, save our souls!
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saints Photius and Anicetus is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
