Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saint Onuphrius of Egypt.
Saint Onuphrius was originally from Persia but lived most of his years in Egypt. From a young age, his devotion to God was great and for this reason he joined a commune in Thebaid, Egypt, while later he wandered alone in the desert, with minimal clothing and meager food.
When Paphnutius met him, Saint Onuphrius revealed to him that he was going to die and that God had sent him to bury him, as it happened. After Paphnutius buried him in the cave where Osios was an ascetic, the rock fell and a palm tree grew in its place.
Since then, Saint Onuphrius is remembered for his strict ascetic life.
Apolytikion of Saint Onuphrius of Egypt
First Tone
Thou didst prove to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O Onuphrius, our God-bearing Father. By fasting, vigil, and prayer thou didst obtain heavenly gifts, and thou healest the sick and the souls of them that have recourse to thee with faith. Glory to Him that hath given thee strength. Glory to Him that hath crowned thee. Glory to Him that worketh healings for all through thee.
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saint Onuphrius is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
