Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saint Menas, the Great Martyr of Egypt.
Saint Menas was born in 285 and, in contrary to his pagan parents, he embraced the Christian faith. He decided to join the Roman Army but a few years later, he resigned from his duties, as he had to participate in the persecution of Christians.
Along the way, he became an ascetic on a mountain and, at the age of fifty, he confessed his past, as well as his faith, to a multitude of pagans. The commander, Pyrrhus, ordered his arrest and, as Saint Menas did not deny Jesus Christ, he was subjected to severe torture and finally was beheaded.
Saint Menas is the patron saint of Heraklion, Crete, since, according to Christian tradition, he saved the Christians from the massacre organised by the pagans, during the Resurrection service in 1826.
Since then, his intense miracle work has helped many people.
Apolytikion of Saint Menas
Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saint Menas is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
