Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saint Theodora of Alexandria.
Saint Theodora was from Alexandria, Egypt and was betrothed to Paphnutius. Despite her honest life, she fell into the sin of adultery. Unable to bear the regrets of her act, even though no one knew about it, Saint Theodora dressed as a man and retired to a monastery, taking the name Theodoros.
There, he lived an austere life full of penance and prayer. Once a baby was abandoned outside the monastery, for which she was found guilty on the charge of having sinned with a woman.
Without revealing her identity, Saint Theodora raised the child for seven years outside the monastery. When she breathed her last, the monks learned her secret and extolled her faith.
Troparion - Tone 8
The image of God was truly preserved in you, O Mother, / for you took up the Cross and followed Christ. / By so doing you taught us to disregard the flesh for it passes away / but to care instead for the soul, since it is immortal. / Therefore your spirit, venerable Theodora, rejoices with the angels.
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saint Theodora of Alexandria is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
