Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist.
The Birth of Saint John the Baptist took place in a miraculous way, which is why it is celebrated with great joy by the Church. According to the Scriptures, the priest Zachariah was informed by an angel that he would have a son, John. However, he expressed his doubts because his wife was old and barren. In order to punish him for his disbelief, the angel made him deaf and dumb until the birth of the child.
After nine months, his wife, Elizabeth, gave birth to a boy, whom they initially wanted to name Zachariah, after his father. However, on a tablet Zachariah wrote the name "John", thus revealing the name the child would receive. At that moment, his tongue was loosed and everyone was convinced of the great importance of the child.
Troparion of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist
Prophet and Forerunner of the coming of Christ, / although we cannot praise you worthily, / we honor you in love at your nativity, / for by it you ended your father’s silence and your mother’s barrenness, / proclaiming to the world the incarnation of the Son of God!
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
