Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saint Dionysius of Zakynthos.
Saint Dionysius was born in 1547 in Zakynthos and received a Christian upbringing. He was ordained a priest and in 1577 he went down to Athens in order to go to the Holy Land. There, the High Priest of Athens heard his sermon and begged him to make him Bishop of Aegina, an honor which he accepted.
He devoted himself to his work and fell ill due to exhaustion. Thus, he resigned and returned to Zakynthos where he became temporary Bishop.
Saint Dionysius died in 1622 and after the exhumation his remains were fragrant. In 1703 he was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Kontakion
On this day doth Zakynthos call all the faithful together, rousing them to offer praise in songs and hymns of thanksgiving to our great and fervent helper in needs and sorrows, who doth swiftly rescue them that are caught in perils. And she honoureth him, crying: O Dionysius, boast of the faithful, rejoice.
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saint Dionysius of Zakynthos is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
