Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Gabriel Archangel, who is depicted holding with his right hand a sword which is a symbol of the authority given to him by God.
Archangel Gabriel is one of the three Archangels mentioned in Christianity. His name means "Man of God" and his coming is mentioned in the Old and New Testaments when he announces to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth to the Son of God and when he announces to Joseph that they must leave Egypt and find refuge in Israel.
Archangel Gabriel is commemorated on the 8th of November each year, together with Archangel Michael.
Apolytikion of Synaxis of the Archangels
O Commanders of the Heavenly Host, we the unworthy beseech you, that through your entreaties you will fortify us, guarding us in the shelter of the wings of your ethereal glory, even as we fervently bow before you crying: "Deliver us from all danger, as Commanders of the Powers on high! "
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Gabriel Archangel is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
