Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saint Philaret the Merciful.
Saint Philaret the Merciful lived in the 8th century and was a wealthy farmer, who gave away a large part of his property to the poor and needy. His great philanthropic work left him poor at some point in his life, but he never complained about his misfortune and continued his philanthropy unabashedly.
When Emperor Constantine VII, son of Queen Irene, married his granddaughter, Maria, he appointed him supreme. From this position, Saint Philaret was able to scale up his Christian work to all those who needed it.
Troparion of Saint Philaret the Merciful
From the wealth of your faith in God, / you distributed your riches to the poor, O Philaret. / Your life was adorned with compassion / and you glorified the Giver of mercy. / Implore him to have compassion and mercy on those who praise you!
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saint Philaret the Merciful is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
