Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of Saint Stamatios.
Saint Stamatios lived in the 17th century in the village of Agios Georgios of Pelion, where he was born. He was distinguished for his loyalty and his reasonableness, which is why he was a key representative of the group sent from Pelion to the Vizier of Constantinople, so that they could be relieved of the heavy taxes demanded by the agha of the region.
The Vizier refused their request and demanded that they leave. During their persecution, some Turkish officials falsely accused Saint Stamatios of having converted to Mohammedanism but living as a Christian.
Saint Stamatios denied the accusation but this did not stop the Vizier from ordering his torture and beheading.
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of Saint Stamatios is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
