Aged-Wooden Byzantine Icon of the Elevation of the Precious Cross.
The Precious Cross was found in 326 AD by Saint Helen, who carried out major excavations at Golgotha. As the robbers' crosses were initially found too, it had to be established which one was the cross of Jesus Christ.
For this reason, they had a dying woman touch each a cross. When the woman touched the Precious Cross, she was resurrected. The miracle became known throughout the city and multitudes flocked to worship the Precious Cross. Saint Helen built a church as an honor place and gave Saint Makarios, the Archibishop of Jerusalem, half of the Precious Cross to place it inside, so that the Christians can go to worship it. The other half was taken to Constantinople by Saint Helen as a blessing.
The Elevation of the Precious Cross is a Despotic feast of our Church and is celebrated with rest from labour by the faithful.
Apolytikion
Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross.
The aging technique is meticulously applied to the Icon by hand and gives it the look of time while the depiction retains its artistic details.
Around the perimeter, the aging becomes more apparent with frayed edges that give the Icon a distinctive appearance.
During the final processing, the Aged-Wooden Icon of the Elevation of the Precious Cross is polished with a special varnish to withstand time.
