Handmade Byzantine Icon of Virgin Mary of the Sea.
The miraculous Icon of Virgin Mary of the Sea is located in the small church at the entrance of Andros, on a rock. According to tradition, the crew of a ship saw a bright light during a storm and decided to follow it.
They arrived at a cave where they saw the Icon of Virgin Mary of the Sea. After they knelt to the Icon and thanked the Virgin Mary for saving them, they took the Icon to the small chapel of Agios Athanasios.
But the next day, miraculously, the Icon of Virgin Mary of the Sea returned to the cave again. The inhabitants of the island respected the will of the Virgin Mary and built a Church on the spot where she was found.
Since then, the Virgin Mary of the Sea has been declared the patron saint of sailors.
The Icon of Virgin Mary of the Sea is an exact copy of Byzantine art and is created by experienced craftsmen using the method of gold printing where hagiographic leaves of 22 karat gold are applied in detail to decorate the background.
During the final processing, the icon is painted with dark red color around the perimeter and polished with a special varnish to maintain its shine.
It is offered in level or recessed wooden surface and is suitable for wall mounting.
