Handmade Byzantine Icon of Saint Procopius, the Great Martyr.
Saint Procopius was born in Jerusalem to a Christian father and a pagan mother. After his father's death, his mother offered him to the emperor Diocletian as a servant. When he grew up, Diocletian ordered him to follow the Persecutions of the Christians.
When Procopius began his journey against the Christians, a sudden tumult of lightning and thunder surrounded him, calling his name. Then Procopius answered the voice and asked to reveal its face. Suddenly, a crystal cross appeared before him and the voice answered: "I am the Crucified Son of God."
When Saint Procopius returned to Jerusalem, his mother realized that her son had converted to Christianity and surrendered him. The local ruler tortured him severely to make him deny his faith, but he endured until his beheading as a faithful Christian.
Apolytikion of Great Martyr Procopius
Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.
The Icon of Saint Procopius is an exact copy of Byzantine art and is created by experienced craftsmen using the method of gold printing where hagiographic leaves of 22 karat gold are applied in detail to decorate the background.
During the final processing, the Icon is painted with dark red color around the perimeter and polished with a special varnish to maintain its shine.
