Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Gregory, Bishop of Agrigentum.
Saint Gregory was born in Agrigentum, Sicily, to a wealthy and pious family. His parents, Chariton and Theodota, wanted to bring him close to God from an early age, which is why they asked Bishop Pataimonus to baptize him and undertake his education.
At the age of eighteen he traveled to the Holy Land and was ordained a deacon. Then, he returned to Rome where he stood out for his education and virtues and was appointed Bishop of Agrigentum. During his episcopate, two clerics fought him by spreading the rumor that Saint Gregory was an adulterer, but the Saint's devotion to God and his miraculous work supported him against the accusations.
Saint Gregory passed away peacefully in 690 AD.
