Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of the Holy Trinity as it was appeared to Abraham.
In the Christian faith, the Holy Trinity describes three divine persons who share one essence. They are consubstantial and of equal power. The source of the Holy Trinity is the Father from whom the Son is begotten and the Holy Spirit proceeds.
According to the book of Genesis, the three persons of God (Father-Son-Holy Spirit) were presented to Abraham as men-messengers. The scene from which the icon is inspired is also known as "The Hospitality of Abraham".
Genesis 18:1-16
The Three Visitors
The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
