Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Sozon, Martyr of Cilicia.
Saint Sozon came from Lycaonia and lived in the 5th century AD in Cilicia where he was a shepherd. He was born a pagan but because of his faith in Jesus Christ, he was baptized a Christian.
He diligently studied the Bible and opposed idolatry. According to Christian tradition, when he saw a golden statue in Pompeiioupolis he managed to break its arm and distributed the proceeds of its sale to the poor.
The prefect Maximian punished many people for this act, until Saint Sozon confessed to him that the statue did not help the poor in any way.
Maximian was enraged by his statement and sentenced him to torture and death.
Apolytikion
Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.
