Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Raphael, the New Martyr of Mitylene, Greece.
Saint Raphael moved to Mytilene after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and together with Saint Nikolaos lived in a Monastery dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary. After about twenty years, Turks arrived on the island and started the persecution against the Christians. When they arrived at the Monastery, they arrested Saint Raphael and tortured him severely, as well as Saint Nikolaos.
After their death, Saint Raphael appeared through visions in many Christians of Mytilene and indicated the place of their martydom.
Our Church honors the memory of Saint Raphael, together with that of Saint Nicholas and Saint Irene, a girl who martyred with them.
Troparion
Your holy martyrs O Lord, / through their sufferings have received incorruptible crowns from You, our God. / For having Your strength, they laid low their adversaries, / and shattered the powerless boldness of demons. / Through their intercessions, save our souls!
