Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of the Parable of the Ten Virgins.
According to Matthew, the Parable of the Ten Virgins was told by Jesus Christ to his disciples during his ascent to Jerusalem.
Jesus Christ said that the Kingdom of Heaven would be like the Parable of Ten Virgins who went out to meet the Bridegroom who would arrive one night. However, only five of the Virgins were wise and brought oil for their lamps. The other five were foolish and brought just their lamps. When the Bridegroom arrived at midnight, only the Virgins that could light their lamps followed him to the wedding banquet. The rest went out to find oil, so they could light their lamps and join the banquet. However, when they arrived, the door was shut and the Bridegroom did not let them pass.
The Parable of the Ten Virgins teaches us that we must be ready for the Kingdom of Heaven and the Day of Judgement.
Matthew, 25:1, 25:13
“Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ "
"But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
