Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Virgin Mary of Passion with Angels.
The Icon of Virgin Mary of Passion derives its name from the symbols of Passion (Cross, Spear and Sponge) held by the two Angels at the top of the image.
In addition, Virgin Mary of Passion is also known as Panagia of Amolyntos ("Immaculate"). Monk Pavlos of the monastery of Theotokos Euergetis in Constantinople, composed the compline from which the Panagia "Amolyntos" Immaculate took her name as it carries the lyrics: "Immaculate, undefiled, uncorrupted, chaste, bride of God and pure Virgin".
Hand-Painted Icons occupy a valuable place in ecclesiastical art because, beyond their obvious artistic value, a hand-painted icon unites man with the holiness of the depicted person.
