Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Nicholas, the New Martyr of Vounena.
Saint Nicholas the New Martyr was an officer in the Imperial Army and his soldiers obeyed his orders and advice. When a rebellion once broke out in the Empire, Saint Nicholas was sent with his army by Leo the Isaurus to quell the violence.
When he arrived at the scene, Saint Nicholas saw fierce battles between people of the Empire. To save his life, but also the lives of his soldiers, he made the decision to retire to the mountains of Thessaly, to live with the ascetics.
In a short time, the Avars arrived, who killed the soldiers and tried to make Agios Nikolaos deny his faith. When this did not happen, they tortured him with his pole and finally beheaded him in 720 AD.
After many years, a church was built in his honor at the spot where the miraculous relic of the Saint was found.
