Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Macrina, Sister of Saint Basil the Great.
Saint Macrina was born in Caesarea, Cappadocia, to the Christian family of Basil the Elder and Emilia. After the death of her future husband, Saint Macrina devoted herself to her faith, which she taught to her younger brothers, Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory of Nyssa.
Together with her mother, she retired to a monastery in Pontus from where she preached the importance of charity and studied the Scriptures with zeal.
Saint Macrina died in 379 AD.
Troparion of Saint Macrina
The image of God was truly preserved in you, O Mother, / for you took up the Cross and followed Christ. / By so doing, you taught us to disregard the flesh, for it passes away, / but to care instead for the soul, since it is immortal. / Therefore your spirit, O Holy Mother Macrina, rejoices with the Angels!
