Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Apostle and Evangelist Saint Luke.
Apostle and Evangelist Saint Luke was born in Antioch, Syria and was of Greek origin. He was apprenticed next to the Apostle Paul and together they reached Rome to preach the Gospel. He went on alone to distant places to teach the Word of God and wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.
He also excelled in painting as the first icons of the Virgin Mary with Jesus Christ and those of the Apostles Peter and Paul are attributed to Evangelist Luke.
As for his death, the information is confused since some sources state that he died a martyr's death while others record that he died peacefully.
