Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint John Damascene.
During the 8th century, Saint John Damascene was a great theologian who actively contributed against iconoclasm under Leo of Isaurian.
He was born in Damascus and was taught extensively by Cosmas the Sicilian until his departure for Jerusalem, specifically for the Holy Monastery of Agios Savvas where he remained for the rest of his life, devoted to his writing work.
During the iconoclasm, and after a forged letter supposedly written by himself in which he offered Damascus to the Byzantines, his hand was cut off. Saint John Damascene begged to be given the severed hand so that he could bury it. However, when he took it, he did not bury it but prayed to the Virgin Mary for healing. Miraculously, his hand was healed.
He died in 749 AD at the age of over a hundred years.
