Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Ignatius the God-Bearer, Bishop of Antioch.
Saint Ignatius was born in Syria and was Bishop of Antioch. With his Epistles, he strengthened the Christian faith and with a passion comparable to the Apostles, he preached the Gospel.
With the persecution unleashed by Trajan against the Christians, Saint Ignatius was transferred from Antioch to Rome where he was left in a large arena with beasts, which devoured him.
He was known by the name "Theophorus", meaning “God-bearer‘, as until the end, his devotion to God was unwavering.
Apolytikion of Saint Ignatius of Antioch
As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Ignatius. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.
