Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of the Sacrifice of Abraham.
Abraham and Sarah had by God's will Isaac, a child they wanted very much. However, after a few years, God spoke to Abraham and told him that he should sacrifice his child, in the way that He would indicate.
With much sorrow but also great obedience, Abraham followed God's instructions and led Isaac to the mountain where the sacrifice would take place. It was just before Abraham sacrificed Isaac that God spoke again and told him that the child did not need to be sacrificed because Abraham proved his unwavering faith in him.
Abraham thanked God, who told him that he would multiply his descendants and increase his tribe, and gladly released Isaac to return to their home.
Genesis 22,16 - 18
And said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
