Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Barnabas the Apostle.
Saint Barnabas the Apostle was born in Cyprus with the name Joseph. He was later known as Barnabas which means "child of prayer" after the great help he offered to the Christians of Jerusalem. He was one of the Seventy Disciples of Christ and an ardent follower of Him.
Together with the Paul the Apostle, he engaged in a great missionary work to preach the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus Christ. When he arrived in Cyprus, pagans spotted him and, after stoning him, threw him into the fire.
Kontakion of Saint Barnabas the Apostle
To thy Lord, O Barnabas, thou wast a genuine servant; and among the Seventy Apostles, thou wast the foremost; and with Paul, thou shonest brightly in thy wise preaching, making known unto all men Christ Jesus, the Saviour. For this cause, we celebrate thy divine memorial with hymns and spiritual songs.
