Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Barbara, the Great Martyr.
In her time, Saint Barbara was considered very beautiful and, because of this, her father kept her locked in a tower. But when he perceived her faith, he handed her over to the Roman Prefect who, after trying to force her to deny her faith, subjected her to severe torture.
Her final punishment was beheading, which her pagan father was ordered to commit, which he did. Right after the heinous crime, a bolt of lightning killed him as Divine Punishment.

Let us honor the holy Barbara for, with the aid of the Cross as her weapon, she crushed the snares of the enemy, and was rescued from them like a bird.
