Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Andrew the Apostle, the First-Called.
Saint Andrew the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles and brother of the Saint Peter the Apostle. The Scriptures state that Saint Andrew was the first to be called by Jesus Christ to become an Apostle, which is why he has remained known as "Protokletos" meaning “The First-Called".
Together with the rest of the disciples, he taught the Word of God and faithfully followed Jesus Christ until his Crucifixion.
Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Patras, as he was martyred there, and most of his relics are in the city's Holy Temple of Saint Andrew.
Apolytikion
As first of the Apostles to be called, O Andrew, brother of him (Peter) who was foremost, beseech the Master of all to grant the world peace and our souls great mercy.
Kontakion
Let us praise the namesake of bravery, the divinely eloquent and first to be called of the Disciples of Christ, the kinsman of Peter. As he called out to him in days of old, so now he calls to us, "Come, we have found Him for whom we yearned."
