Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Lucia.
Saint Lucia was originally from Syracuse, Sicily and was the wife of a pagan. As her mother, Eftychia, suffered from bleeding, she went with her to the Shrine of Saint Agatha. There, Saint Lucia had visions of the miraculous Saint, who assured her that her mother would be healed, and she was.
Determined to devote herself to her faith, Saint Lucia distributed her wealth to the needy and followed a monastic life. But her husband, enraged by her attitude, handed her over as a Christian to the ruler Pashasios, who ordered her arrest.
His army tried in vain to capture Saint Lucia, as with the help of the Lord she remained motionless. Eventually, the soldiers mortally wounded her and abandoned her.
Kontakion of Saint Lucia
We extol with fervent love thy most illustrious contest, and we praise and honour thee as a chaste virgin and victor; for since thou didst seek the beauty of Christ and none else, thou didst hate all things corruptible, O wise Lucia. Wherefore, when thou wast beheaded, thou wast adorned with an incorruptible crown.
