Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Panagia Galaktotrofousa. Panagia is depicting nursing the Christ Child.
The Icon of Panagia Galaktotrofousa was originally located in Holy Lavra of Saint Savvas.
Before he died, Saint Savvas instructed the people close to him to give the Icon of Panagia Galaktotrofousa to a man named Savvas who would one day visit Holy Lavra. In the 13th century, Saint Savvas, Archibishop of Serbia, arrived in Lavra, thus fulfilling the prophecy and received the Icon which transferred to the Holy Monastery of Chilandari on Mount Athos.
Now, it is located in the church of Karies of Mount Athos, which is subject to the Holy Monastery of Chilandari, and it is placed on the right side of the templon where the image of Jesus Christ is traditionally located.
