Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Jonah the Prophet.
Jonah the Prophet lived in the 8th century BC and is considered one of the Twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. Once, God commissioned him to go to the city of Nineveh to teach the Word of God and prophesy its impending destruction.
Nevertheless, Jonah the Prophet did not follow his orders and boarded a ship bound for Spain. When a storm broke out and they were in danger of being shipwrecked, they judged Jonah as guilty and threw him into the sea.
There, a whale swallowed him and the Jonah was found in the animal's stomach. For three days and nights, Jonah prayed to God to save him, which he did. The whale released him on land.
After his miraculous rescue, Jonah the Prophet hastened to fulfill God's wish. So he arrived at Nineveh and led its people to the way of God.
