Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint John Chrysostom.
Saint John Chrysostom was born in 347 in Antioch and was raised with a Christian education by his mother, Anthousa. He was educated under great teachers of the time, who distinguished him for his spirit and intelligence.
After his asceticism, he was ordained deacon and then, he went to Constantinople for the Archbishop's throne for which he was elected. From this position, he carried out reform actions in the Church and fought arbitrariness. Dissatisfied with Saint John's leadership, Empress Eudoxia exiled him twice, eventually leading him to die of exhaustion.
His death saddened the Christian community since he was considered a Great Father of the Church and was one of the Three Hierarchs, together with Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint Basil the Great. In addition, he left an extensive written work of great theological importance.
Troparion of Saint John Chrysostom
