Saint John the Merciful was born in Cyprus during the reign of Heraclius. He grew up with a Christian education, which he passed on to his own descendants.
However, his family quickly passed away, leaving him alone and with a large fortune, which he constantly offer to those in need. His great charity led him to become Patriarch of Alexandria. From this position he was able to help his community even more.
He passed away peacefully in 620 AD.
