Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saints Theodores Tiro and Stratelates.
Saints Theodores, Tiro and Stratelates, were protectors of Christians during the years of persecutions.
Saint Theodore the Tiro came from the Black Sea and belonged to the Tyrones, i.e. the newly recruited soldiers. When his officers discovered his faith, they asked him to renounce it. However, he refused and was tortured in a red-hot furnace until his death.
Saint Theodore the Stratelates came from Gaul and was a high official in the army. In 320 AD Licinius was informed that Saint Theodore did not embrace Christianity and to prove it he ordered him to sacrifice to idols. Saint Theodore asked for small statuettes so that he could perform a sacrifice in private, a wish approved by Licinius.
However, Saint Theodore cut the gold statuettes into pieces and distributed them to the poor. When they discovered his treason, the officers arrested him and crucified him.
Apolytikion of Saint Theodore the Stratelates and Great Martyr
In truth enlisted with the King of the Heavens, thou didst become for Him a noble commander, O trophy-bearer and Great Martyr Theodore. With the weaponry of faith didst thou arm thyself wisely and didst utterly destroy all the hordes of the demons, as a triumphant athlete of the Lord; wherefore we ever do faithfully call thee blest.
Apolytikion of Saint Theodore the Tyro
Great are the achievements of faith! In the fountain of flame, as by the water of rest, the holy Martyr Theodore rejoiced; for having been made a whole-burnt offering in the fire, he was offered as sweet bread unto the Trinity. By his prayers, O Christ God, save our souls.
