Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Eleutherios.
Saint Eleutherios came from a good family and after a trip with his mother, Anthia, to Rome, Bishop Anicetus took him under his protection and a few years later ordained him deacon and priest.
His career was long as his spirit was pure and he led a pious life. Thus, he was elected Bishop of Illyricum and helped the Christians with his works.
His action upset the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus who ordered his torture to the arena of Rome with wild beasts. When these beasts did not attack the Saint, the pagans beheaded him and his mother.
Saint Eleutherios is traditionally the patron saint of pregnant women who advocates for safe childbirth.
