Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Gregory the Theologian.
Saint Gregory the Theologian was born in 329 near the city of Nazianzos in Cappadocia and grew up with a Christian education. He traveled for over ten years in order to receive a wide education, and then returned to his homeland and took the position of Bishop.
After the loss of his family, Saint Gregory went to Constantinople, where he vigorously defended Christianity against the heretics of the time.
His action was memorable and significantly influenced the climate of the time. For this reason, he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople and president of the Second Ecumenical Council. However, many blamed him for his election and, as a result, Saint Gregory resigned his offices.
He retired to the desert to lead an ascetic life. There, he died peacefully, leaving behind a great literary work of theological importance.
