Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Neophytos of Cyprus.
Saint Neophytos was born in Cyprus in 1134 in a poor family. During his work at the Monastery of Saint Chrysostomos in Nicosia, he was taught the alphabet and came close to the Word of God.
After a few years he became a monk and visited Jerusalem. When he returned, he practiced in Enkleistra, a natural cave in a steep part of a mountain near Paphos. Over the years, and after Saint Neophytos gained great fame, the Enkleistra was expanded with several cells for the monks who wanted to join him in his monastic life.
Saint Neophytos died after 1214 on an unknown date, leaving behind a large literary work.
