Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Elizabeth.
Saint Elizabeth was originally from Thrace and her parents conceived her in a miraculous way with the help of Saint Glyceria.
At the age of 15, Saint Elizabeth was orphaned by her parents and decided to begin her monastic life in a Monastery in Constantinople where an aunt of hers was abbess.
She distributed her wealth to the poor and devoted herself to the Gospel, while she was also blessed with the gift of miracle - working. Saint Elizabeth stayed for many years in the Monastery where she was chosen for the role of Abbess and followed an ascetic life. Shortly before she died, she saw in a vision the Virgin Mary who explained to her that her time to ascend to the heavens is near.
Apolytikion
The image of God, was faithfully preserved in you, O Mother. For you took up the Cross and followed Christ. By Your actions you taught us to look beyond the flesh for it passes, rather to be concerned about the soul which is immortal. Wherefore, O Holy Elizabeth, your soul rejoices with the angels.
