Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Chrysostom of Smyrne.
Saint Chrysostom was born in 1867 in Bithynia and from a young age expressed his love for Christianity and the desire to become a clergyman. He studied at the Theological School of Chalkis and was ordained a deacon in the Diocese of Mytilene.
He had a brilliant career and a few years later he was Metropolitan of Drama and then, in 1910, he was appointed Metropolitan of Smyrna.
During the destruction of Smyrna in 1922, he was given safe escape, but Saint Chrysostom refused to abandon his flock. Finally, he suffered a martyr's death in August of the same year.
