Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Polyxene.
Saint Polyxene came from Spain. Because of her beauty, she was kidnapped by a man and taken to Patras, where she turned to the Christians for protection.
She was baptized by Saint Andrew and together with her sister, Saint Xanthippe, dedicated herself to a great Christian work until the end of her life.
Troparion of Saint Xanthippe and Polyxene
You received the light of the divine Faith, / and your works shone with piety, O divinely-inspired Polyxénē; / you glorified Christ in your life / as well as by your blameless actions; / therefore intercede with the Lord Who glorified you, to grant us great mercy.
Hand-Painted Icons occupy a valuable place in ecclesiastical art because, beyond their obvious artistic value, a hand-painted icon unites man with the holiness of the depicted person.
