Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Martha, Sister of Lazarus.
Saint Martha, along with her sister, Mary, and her brother, Lazarus, were very close to Jesus Christ. His teachings were a source of strength mainly for Mary, while Saint Martha took care of the table of hospitality. As we read in Luke's Gospel, Jesus says to her: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things."
After the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Saint Martha dedicated herself, together with her sister, to spreading the Gospel, until her peaceful death.
Kontakion of Mary and Martha
In the town of Bethany, ye dwelt of old; now in Heaven ye abide in Paradise, where our Lord's countenance shineth. For ye gave your hearts and souls up with fervent longing unto Him that is the Life and the Resurrection; as ye stand on high, O Mary and Martha, pray Him to grant salvation to us.
