Byzantine Hand Painted Icon of Saint Nikon.
Saint Nikon was born in Paphlagonia in Asia Minor around 925 AD. He was raised with a Christian upbringing but rebelled against his wealthy family, and left to preach the Word of God.
For some years he was a monk at a Monastery of Pontus and then he traveled to many parts of Greece constantly repeating the words of John the Baptist "Repent, for the kingdom of heavens is at hand". That is why, he is also known as "Saint Nikon Metanoeite".
He died in 998 AD in the city of Sparta. Since then, he has been declared the patron saint of the city.

Emulating the life of the Angels, thou didst esteem the world's delights as dross, while showing us the paths of repentance, O righteous and God-bearing Nicon. Wherefore, as we now celebrate thy memorial, we honour thee; for thou in truth art a fountain of healings.
