Last Supper - Byzantine Icon
This icon has been painted on the Holy Mount Athos. It depicts the Last Supper Jesus Christ shared with his followers before being arrested. The main character at the table is Christ. On occasion, the chalice holding the Precious Blood of Christ is held or placed on the table.
Most Orthodox churches have The Last Supper icon (also known as the Mystical Supper icon) above the royal doors of the iconostasis. The faithful congregate in front of this image to receive the Eucharist during Divine Liturgy. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated in the Altar, which is beyond the icon. The Savior's institution of the Sacrament is remembered at the Last Supper.
