Handmade Byzantine Icon of Saint Christopher.
Saint Christopher was originally called Reprobus, a name that means rascal as he came from an almost barbaric tribe.
When he was captured by the Romans, he took charge to transport people from one bank to the other of a dangerous river. According to tradition, one day a child asked him to carry him across the river. Christopher willingly carried the child on his shoulders even though the weight increased as they went. When they reached the opposite bank, Christopher confessed to the child that he felt as if he was carrying the whole world, and the child replied that he was not carrying the whole world, but the creator of it, and then the child disappeared.
After this miraculous event, he embraced Christianity and received baptism with the name Christopher which means "Christ bearer".
He fought the persecution of Christians as much as he could and for this he was tortured and beheaded in 251 AD.
Kontakion
Thou who wast terrifying both in strength and in countenance, for thy Creator's sake thou didst surrender thyself willingly to them that sought thee; for thou didst persuade both them and the women that sought to arouse in thee the fire of lust, and they followed thee in the path of martyrdom. And in torments thou didst prove to be courageous. Wherefore, we have gained thee as our great protector, O great Christopher.
