Handmade Byzantine Icon of Saint Peter the Apostle.
Saint Peter the Apostle came from Bisthaida and was one of the Twelve Disciples of Jesus Christ. Initially, he was called Simon, but because of his steadfast faith, the Lord gave him the name Peter, from the word "petra", which means "stone".
With the coming of the Messiah, Peter left the profession of fisherman he practiced and followed Jesus Christ with faith in his teaching. Nevertheless, because of his fear of the Jews, Peter denied his teacher three times just before the Crucifixion.
For his act, Christ gave him forgiveness and assigned him missionary work. Indeed, Apostle Peter toured many places preaching the Word of God until his death in 67 AD.
Our Church honors the memory of Saint Peter the Apostle together with that of Paul the Apostle.
